COMMENTARY:
This song had it's beginings on the island of Pohnpei where we were missionaries. There was a time where we were responsible for pastoring two churches on the island. One church in the main town, Kolonia, which was a large cinder block building and the other church on the other side ofthe island in Madolenihmw. That church was local-style with no walls and built from mangrove logs and a tin roof. One day, while I was leading worship for our youth group in Madolenihmw, I began to sing the song, "Spirit Of The Living God." We were just having a time of spontaneous worship and I began to sing about the wind of the Holy Spirit. Just then a very strong wind began to blow violently in and around the church building, but no where else that we could see on the island. As I stopped singing about the wind of the Holy Spirit, the wind died out. Thinking it was just coincidence, I began to sing again about the wind of the Holy Spirit, and again, it became very windy only in and around the church. I could hardly believe it. Then when I quit singing about the wind of the Holy Spirit it died out again. I figured I would try it one more time and so I did, and as I sand, the wind of the Holy Spirit blew in and around that place of worship. The thing is, we had some new youth visiting who had never experienced the power of the true and living God. They had only experienced whatever limited power was practiced through black magic and witchcraft on the island. That day we all came away from that time of worship knowing that a miracle of God had taken place in that even the forces of nature changed in accordance to our worship of the Lord. Although I began to write this song in Micronesia, it has a very Middle Eastern and even Egyptian-type of feel. Ethnic music and beats truly moves me to inspiration in song writing.

COMMENTARY:
Starting writing the chorus of this song while installing hardwood floors in California. The part of the song that really hit me was the fact that we can offer our lives to God as a sacrifice. The Old Testament is full of imagery that paints the animal and blood sacrifices as central to the worship of Yahweh. This, of course, was fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ, as He was the Lamb of God slain from the foundation of the world. But we, as Christ-followers, can also offer ourselves as living sacrifices to God (Romans 12:2). I have heard it said that the problem with living sacrifices is that they keep crawling off the altar. In my life, I desire to lay my entire life on God's altar, and reckon my sinful nature as dead, and that the aroma that arises from this self-sacrifice would be pleasing to Yahweh.
